🔍 Research foundations

Dr. Husain’s doctoral research at the Central University of Gujarat (2014–2018) examined the export performance of Indian SMEs, showing how regional dynamics and agglomeration shape which enterprises reach foreign markets. His earlier M.Phil. work (2012–2014) traced the relationship between policy frameworks and the growth of India’s pharmaceutical industry across states — a theme that runs through his earliest publications. Both built on an economics training that began at Aligarh Muslim University, where he completed his bachelor’s and master’s degrees.

Research focus

  • SME exports and the spatial dynamics of trade
  • Regional and spatial disparities in industrial development
  • Growth, learning regions, and policy in India’s pharmaceutical industry
  • International trade relations, including India–EU and India–Germany trade
  • Industrial clusters and local enterprise

Professional experience

Before Gaya College, Dr. Husain built a varied research and teaching career:

  • As a Consultant at the Indira Gandhi Institute of Development Research (IGIDR), Mumbai, and a Project Officer at the INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar, he worked extensively with national survey and economic census data, and authored user manuals that made statistical tools accessible to researchers.
  • During a six-year tenure at Galgotias University, he served as Program Chair and NAAC Coordinator and supervised three Ph.D. scholars — among them Subodh Kumar Agarwal, whose 2024 doctorate examined India–EU trade relations with a focus on Germany. The two have co-authored several studies on Indo-German and India–EU trade.

The CUG connection

The Central University of Gujarat is where Dr. Husain’s research identity took shape — and where his long collaboration with Prof. Jaya Prakash Pradhan began. Together they have produced a series of studies over the years: from the drivers of SME formation across Indian states (see the related piece on this site, “Where Do India’s Small Businesses Thrive?”) and the pattern of Indian outward FDI in ASEAN, to a recent assessment of Odisha’s evolving industrial landscape.

“Transformative and enriching. Under Prof. Jaya Prakash Pradhan’s mentorship, I learned that rigorous research isn’t just about methodology — it’s about asking the right questions and pursuing answers with unwavering dedication.” — Dr. Tareef Husain

Looking ahead

Dr. Husain’s current research asks how India can close regional economic gaps, what role technology will play in regional development, and how growth can be made genuinely inclusive — extending his work on trade, industrial clusters, and the geography of enterprise. As he reminds his students, economics “isn’t just about numbers; it’s about understanding how policies and practices shape lives and livelihoods.”
